Latest ATM Scam & How To Protect Your Account

Things will continue to change they say, when one secret expires another will emerge.

ATM robbery has taken a new dimension in Nigeria especially in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcout and cities with abundant ATM machines.
This is how they operate:

ATM robbery now takes place over the weekend when they are sure the banks will be closed because of the weekend.

These robbers visit ATMs on Friday evenings and they forcefully collect the ATM cards as well as PIN codes from customers who come to use the ATM on Friday evening.

They usually approach you with a smile while you are attempting to make a withdrawal, display their guns and also point to their colleagues around in case you attempt to play smart by refusing or screaming.
They then collect your ATM card(s) and ask for your four digits PIN codes.

They are so smart that they even confirm the PIN there to know if its fake or not. Their intention is to withdraw at least the Bank ATM withdrawal limit of N100,000 daily. If you now check, a withdrawal that Friday, Saturday and Sunday will equal N300,000.00.

They do this criminal acts on Friday evenings because they know Banks have closed for the day and are on weekend break only to resume on Monday morning.

They also know that majority of Nigerians don't have the phone numbers of their Account Officers or any staff in their Bank and as such can't place a call to have their ATM card blocked by the Bank until 8am Monday morning when Banks resumes.

So this is how they operate

You are therefore advised that withdrawal via ATMs should be done at most, Friday Afternoon when Banks are still open. Avoid withdrawing on Weekends especially on lonely and relatively less secure environments.

This information was corroborated by someone who at gun point had 3 of her ATM cards snatched, her PIN collected with a total of about N680,000 withdrawn between Friday and Sunday night from her 3 accounts via ATM.

This individual was helpless because she could not place a call across to her Account Officer because she never thought of the need of having his or her number in the first place.

Be careful and share to prevent someone who might be a future victim. if I were you I will henceforth, have my Account Officer's number in my phone to avoid loosing hard earned money, which you have worked for over a long period of time.

Furthermore, abide by all directives given to you by your Bank towards the safety of your ATM Card.

Kindly share to help your neighbour.
