How to Perform Mobile Number Portability and The Benefits of Porting

How do you feel if you will be able to change from one network service provider to another without losing your phone number or changing it, i.e. if your MTN number is 080123456789, and you want to change to Airtel, and at the end of the day, your Airtel number will still remain 080123456789, this is what Mobile Number Porting is all about. It means you get to retain your mobile number while you switch your network.

What is Mobile Number Portability?

Number Portability it is a process that allows one move from one existing network provider to another one, without losing ones phone number,
this was made known By NCC to the general public in other to help check the quality of services provided by different network providers, which will in turn bring about competition.

Most people have seen the need for this and have foreseen that MTN will be greatly hit by this development, due to the fact that they has been an unending period of poor network service on their network ranging from poor and unclear call quality, slow internet connection, unnecessary deduction of airtime, to mention just a few, though we know all these exist but there is little or noting we can do about this, but if you are tired of a particular service provider or you moved to a new location and you discovered that a particular service provider is doing well over there and you want to switch/port to that service provider, here are steps to port and still retain your mobile number.

  • Walk into the service providers nearest to you with your valid ID, mobile number you want to port to, you will be directed to initiate the porting process by dialing the port code associated with the network service provider, after which your personal information will be obtained from you.

  • A new SIM will be issued to you after the porting process is completed, and within 24 -48 hours, the old SIM will stop working and the new one will start to work.
(You can be using your old SIM, but when it stops working, you should know that the porting has been completed, so you should at this time switch to the new SIM)
NOTE: Before the porting process, you are advised to save your SIM messages, SIM contacts and any other information stored on your old SIM, any unused airtime left in the old SIM will not be recovered.

If for any reason you want to either port back to your previous service provider or to another service provider, after a previous port, you have to wait for 90 days.

Benefits of Porting

When you switch you don’t have to go through the stress of telling your friends and colleagues that you have changed your number-your number remains the same.

Porting your number will grant you access to the service of another service provider without losing your phone number. For example, if I port from Glo to MTN, I will still retain my Glo phone number but I have to recharge with airtime from MTN.
