Those who use Android OS and iPhone will forever remember the 21st and 22nd of September 2013. This is the day Research in Motion (RIM) officially launched Blackberry Messenger (BBM) for Android and iPhone.
Blackberry Messenger has been exclusive to RIM smartphones which created some sort of virtual "VIPness" for BlackBerry users with a unique personal identification number (PIN) linked permanently to each BlackBerry device. Most BlackBerry smartphone owners will tell you BlackBerry Messenger is the major reason they pay for monthly subscriptions because it enables them stay connected with friends and family.
Why is RIM doing this?
We on the outside cannot categorically say why RIM is selling out their uniqueness but only an insider or an expert in business strategy can really tell why this bold move was made by RIM to share what made them exclusive and unique.
If we go by what News reports have revealed that Blackberry incurred huge losses from the poor sales of the newly launched Q10 and Z10 BlackBerry phones which sold about 4 Million in the 2nd quarter, which also brought about the fact that it will be getting rid of 40% of their workforce to reduce cost. Then selling out their uniqueness may be an attempt to reduce loss.
I think they've come to realize that other smartphones are not going anywhere and are working hard to be unique in their own way.
Alternatively, I think they have discovered that their uniqueness is gradually fading out as BlackBerry users are not satisfied with BlackBerry Messenger alone but downloading, and using whatsapp and other social networking applications that allow cross-platform communications more everyday.

Emmanouil Revmatas, Director of Hand Held Products, Samsung electronics West Africa confirmed that BBM will be available for download free on Google Play store to allow Samsung Galaxy smartphone users running Android and any other Android powered smartphone of OS 4.x join the 60 Million Blackberry community.iPhone users running iOS 6 and iOS 7 will be able to search BBM on App Store from 22nd September and Download.
